Boeing and Nigeria Sign Agreement to Boost Aviation Sector
Boeing and Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance the country’s aviation sector. This partnership comes at a time when Africa is emerging as a key player in the global aviation market, with air traffic growth on the continent expected to surpass the global average over the next 20 years.
Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Festus Keyamo, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration. “We are thrilled to enter into this important agreement with Boeing, which will benefit Nigerian airlines and support the development of our civil aviation sector,” said Keyamo. He highlighted Nigeria’s position as Africa’s largest economy with the continent’s biggest population, emphasizing the nation’s potential to drive aviation growth in Africa. The minister also noted that the support provided through this partnership aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s priorities, aiming to help local airlines grow and thrive.
Under this agreement, Boeing will work closely with the ministry and Nigerian airlines, offering planning workshops, training, technical support, and assessments to airline operators. This collaboration aims to build a sustainable civil aviation ecosystem in Nigeria, focusing on innovation and progress.
Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales for Africa, underscored the significance of this agreement. “This partnership is a crucial step towards establishing a sustainable civil aviation ecosystem in Nigeria. There is shared interest and value in driving innovation and progress,” said Yitbarek. He emphasized Nigeria’s potential to foster economic growth, connect people, and shape the future of aviation in Africa and beyond.
According to Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook, Africa will require 1,170 new airplanes over the next two decades. Boeing has been a key player in Africa’s aviation industry for over 75 years, with more than 60 airlines across the continent operating around 500 Boeing aircraft, representing nearly 70% of the African airplane market.
This agreement marks a significant milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s aviation sector and underscores the country’s growing importance in the global aviation landscape.
