Kenya Airways Suspends Flights to Mogadishu
Kenya Airways has announced the suspension of its passenger flights to Mogadishu starting from October 14, 2024. KQ cited operational challenges as the reason for the decision. This was confirmed in a letter addressed to Mohamed Dhaghar, Principal Secretary at the State Department of Transport, on October 9.
In the letter, KQ Group Managing Director Allan Kilavuka explained that the move was made after a thorough analysis of the situation. “This decision was made after careful analysis and consideration in the best interest of the airline in the prevailing business environment,” Kilavuka stated.
Kenya Airways Group Managing Director, Allan Kilavuka, expressed gratitude to the Kenyan embassy in Mogadishu and government officials for their ongoing support as the airline continues to work on expanding its network and delivering reliable air travel services.
Kilavuka acknowledged that the suspension of flights to Mogadishu may disrupt some of the progress made.
“We request your understanding in this unforeseen development, which could potentially reverse the positive trends and gains achieved so far. We hope for your continued understanding and consideration,” he said.
He urged the Kenyan government to consider the potential consequences of the decision.
“Kenya Airways asks for your understanding regarding this unexpected development, which may impact the positive progress and achievements we’ve made so far. This decision was reached after thorough analysis, keeping in mind the best interests of the airline in the current business environment,” he explained.
Kenya Airways’ suspension of flights to Mogadishu comes at a time of rising tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia. The two nations are currently embroiled in a dispute over a deal with Somaliland concerning access to the sea, further straining their relations.
The airline’s move may also be influenced by market conditions, as Kenya Airways faces stiff competition from low-cost Somali airlines operating the same route, offering greater flexibility.
